Know the Difference

HIGH BLOOD SUGAR

Slow onset

Diabetic acidosis

LOW BLOOD SUGAR

Rapid onset

Warning Signs:

Increased thirst and urination

Weakness, abdominal pains,
generalized aches

Heavy labored breathing
Fruit-like odor

Nausea and vomiting


Warning Signs:

Excessive sweating, faintness

Headache, hunger

Pounding of heart, trembling,
blurred vision

Loss of appetite

Irritability

Inability to awaken

Personality change


What to Do:

Call doctor immediately

Give patient fluids without sugar if able to swallow

Test blood frequently for sugar

What to Do:

Take food containing sugar
(Orange juice, sugar
sweetened soda or 6-8
lifesavers)

Do not give insulin

Do not give anything by mouth if not conscious

Call doctor

Causes:

Too little insulin

Failure to follow diet

Infection, fever

Emotional stress

Causes:

Too much insulin

Not eating enough food

Unusual amount of exercise

Delayed meals
